February Edition of Wii Newsletter for QUEST Seminars
Using Wii Fit Plus for Training Single Leg Stance
Single Leg Stance is an important predictor of injurious falls in the elderly and also strongly correlates with the incidence of falls. Therefore, if we improve our patients ability to achieve single-leg stance, we can decrease their risk of falling. The Wii Fit gives us a new treatment option to train single leg stance—biofeedback. We can use activities in the the Yoga and Strength Training Programs to improve single leg stance in our patients. Certain activities in the Yoga Programs (i.e. “Tree Pose”) will train static single leg stance, while certain activities in the Strength Training Programs (i.e “single leg extension”) will train dynamic single leg stance.
REMEMBER: You don’t have to do the pose exactly as it appears on the screen! Practice just standing on one leg as usual when you do the tree pose; the biofeedback won’t change! Also, don’t forget: a standard walker fits perfectly around the Wii Fit Balance Board!
